An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the event.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the period preceding former President Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A single trader, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But these probabilities had increased to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the morning of Saturday, indicating a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on inside information," commented an industry expert.

Several of other traders also earned significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A new rule presented on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the past few years, with users able to predict everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

This sector were examined under the Biden administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Insider trading is a crime in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting arena.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
