Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted – genuinely, no former commander would have conceived – independently wrecking significant portions of the White House to build a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of numerous America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with the government.

As bewildering as it is to observe the leader try to upend the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there is one large group among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we were raised with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of compassion into a figure of hate who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, because theoretically Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and given that the fastest-growing cadre of Americans could have minimal awareness about him because they identify as non-believers or uncertain individuals or nones. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly absolutely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch appearing; conversely, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The Savior's reaction to violence is to turn the opposite cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a means to teach the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing states that when a person pilfers your jacket you must offer them your pullover as well.
The obvious and direct truth that the Jesus from scripture requests a kind of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the populace, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. In the fifties it was contained through watering down – Protestantism was so prevalent that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Finest Among Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to witness the steadfast resistance regarding Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has been significant comfort to participate in developing the initiative that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated voters to participate in large quantities in interim political contests.
